The Great Dictator (1940)

Ahead Of Its Time
Charlie Chaplin's comedy about Hitler and the Nazi Party is amazing when you consider that it came out right at the start of the war and it takes direct aim at the most horrible force in Europe in the 20th century. The film is both a mockery of the dictator and a call for peace among the people. The final speech that Chaplin gives stands out as one of the most moving speeches in film history. If only we would listen now.

Hi Jessica,
I just watched the movie for the first time, and it was incredible. You are so right about that final speech. Some people argue that it's an unwelcome editorial that doesn't fit with the rest of the movie. I believe just the opposite, that the contrast is necessary to fully appreciate the effect. The parallels between what Chaplin talked about, and the current state of the world are uncanny. We could all benefit from taking his message to heart. Thank you. |
