MacLaine still rules

Based loosely on the life of actress Carrie Fisher, the daughter to famous film stars Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, the movie details the life of an up and coming actress squelched by her drug abuse and erratic off screen antics.

Meryl Streep is good here as always, as is Dennis Quaid as the actor/lothario who tempts her back into the dark side after she tries to get healthy. (Look out for a killer small role by Annette Bening. I think I've been saying "En-Dolphins" just because of her line in this role, ever since.)

Yet it is Shirley MacLaine who steals the show as the boozy attention wh*re mother (Based on Reynolds, of course). She manages to get you to sympathize with an otherwise unsympathetic character, giving the movie both some of its biggest laughs and its most heartfelt moments.

A great movie for the acting as well as a candid look on some of the goings on behind the screen and what it's like to try and rebuild a career in Hollywood.
