Chevy Chase Holidays at Home
It took five years, but National Lampoon are back...with another Vacation movie!!
That's right, the Griswolds: Clark (Chevy Chase), his tolerant wife Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) and their kids, Rusty and Audrey (this time played by Johnny Galecki and Juliette Lewis) decide to spend their Christmas Vactaion at home, and invite all the relatives around, played by a grand variety of comedic, and non-comedic actors, including Randy Quaid, Diane Ladd, Doris Roberts, E. G. Marshall and others. Of course, this being a Griswold family vacation, their are many hijinks and stuff-ups which make for a pretty funny experience, all in Clark's attempt to hold the perfect Family Christmas.
One thing writer, John Hughes, knows how to do with his scripts is no matter how much of a screw up Clark is, no matter how mental he goes, we all still wish he was our own Dad. Hughes has an excellent way of keeping a lot of heart in his films without having it turn to a slushy schmaltz, and it really shows in this film. Chevy Chase is at his manic best, especially when he goes on an anger fueled tirade against his boss' character, and every face pull and comedic setup are hilarious.
Of course, the kids are changed again for this one, played by Roseanne's Johnny Galecki, and Natural Born Killer Juliette Lewis, who do an Ok job in roles that continue to be throwaway foils for Clark's shenanigans, and don't seem to have really that much to do at all.
I also have to admit, I have a soft spot for Beverlly D'Angelo...well, it's not always soft...fnark!!
I reckon this was easily as funny as the first one!!
