Middle of the Road

This is one of those movies where everyone remembers it, everyone's seen it and they all believe it was a good flick - but ask them why it's good and you'll get a blank stare in return.

MERMAIDS tells the tale of a single mother in the '60's who has two daughters, one a teenager played by Winona Ryder (who looks more like she's in her mid-twenties) and the other a young girl obsessed with swimming played by a young Christina Ricci. (Johnny Depp once was interviewed and said that it was weird starring with her in SLEEPY HOLLOW since he had known her as a small child because he was engaged to Winona when this was being filmed.)

When the mother (played by Cher) finally settles down in a small town and takes up in an affair with a nice schmo played by Bob Hoskins, things start to look peachy for the little family. But because she's afraid of commitment and he looks like he wants one, she gets cold feet. Nothing really all that special.

The side story of Winona's character developing a crush on the older bus driver is vaguely interesting - if you're in high school yourself. (The bus driver is played by the seducer of another young cinema girl, Michael Schoeffling, better known as Jake Ryan from SIXTEEN CANDLES.)

It's an average movie with a good soundtrack. That's about as much as it moved me to say.

It's funny how you never notice things like that...until they're actually said out loud...or typed for you to read in this case. I've always thought this movie kicked ass, but now that you word it this way...I completely agree with you...it's just an average movie. But if you know me well...you know I love to sing and love music...so I'm sure the Awesome soundtrack is what got me hooked on this flick.
*sings* "No, no that's not the way and you're not listening to all I say! If you wanna know, if he loves you so...it's in his kiss! Whoa whoa it's in his kiss!"
;)
