Most people that remember this movie without fondness are the ones who focus on the tie in with that annoying Righteous Brothers' song. It was used during a visually memorable scene of Swayze and Moore getting romantic after Moore was using a pottery wheel. It's one of the most recognized AND spoofed scenes in cinematic history.
So honestly, you can't knock the movie just for that reason. Whether we like it or not there are parts of the Hollywood machine that can't be ignored. Just as much as some cult classic, low-budget movies have broken through to mainstream audiences, there are times when something big budget will permeate our minds and stick there. We can't say it's ONLY because of the movie being big budget, or else PEARL HARBOR would be more fondly remembered.
I think what gets to me about this flick is that people tend to think back on it as being a romantic movie, when it really is a ghost film. There is a murder, there is funny and legitimate haunting, there is a question of whether or not ghosts could exist. I personally don't think so and find that's where the movie remains popular with the religiously bound or the spiritually sound.
But I can't deny that I didn't enjoy portions of the movie featuring Whoopi. I do believe there is a good reason why she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this movie, even if there are people who don't like her now.
The ending of the movie is too over the top, with the bad animated ghosts... well, I guess that's a spoiler thing for the 2 or 3 people who haven't watched this movie. But I will say that I would prefer to watch this over DIRTY DANCING or any of the other 90's romantic sh*t that Swayze was involved in. Or anyone else with a light weight mullet for that matter.

I really liked Vincent Schiavelli's character in this movie. He is one of those "unusual" looking actors who gets the best oddball roles like his role of Bigbootay in Buckaroo Banzai.
The downside is seeing Demi in Mom jeans and having her hair cut shorter and more boyishly styled than Swayze (and that isn't to say that Swayze looked masculine in this movie either. Just a sign of the times I guess, Road House still rocks!) |
