Thumbs down No Country For Old Men (!!SPOILER ALERT!!)

*****************!!SPOILER ALERT!!******************

I couldnt find a discussion for this movie. I am curious as to why you feel it deserves praise. Also which film would you have picked for Best Picture out of the 2008 nominees?

[Somewhat of a review]

The movie starts out pretty interesting. Llewelyn Moss is out in the desert hunting, and he comes across a slew of dead bodies, a truckload of heroin, and a satchel of quite a bit of money. He walks away with the satchel and it causes him to be hunted down by creepy villain extraordinaire Anton Chigur. Chigur has an interesting method of doing away with people and youre left wondering just how they are going to catch this guy.

But thats not even the main point of the story. The movie is centered around Tommy Lee Jones' character Sheriff Blank. He's getting old, times are changing, and he isnt cut out to deal with criminals that are on the level of Chiggur. As he follows the path of Moss and Chigur, he realizes that people in their way are dying and he's not gonna be able to resolve this in time to save lives. As the title suggests in this case, "Old Men" are not equipped for this sort of thing.

So its a game of cat and mouse for awhile, and the hick who shouldve minded his own business gets killed. The killer gets away, but it feels insinuated that he will get whats coming to him eventually. He slithers away bleeding.. who knows if he lives or dies.... and closing scene is Sheriff Incapable at the breakfast table giving his wife a big fat "Oh Well...."

That's exactly how I was left feeling after watching No Country For Old Men.

End Review

So yeah they couldve tied it up all neatly by showing Chigur in cuffs, yadda yadda... but i guess he gets caught up with eventually so it was unnecessary?

Out of the movies I saw for 2008 I liked Atonement.

Red face

I liked it. It was a depessing and sombre movie, but I felt it got to the point (the 'ah well') better than what the book did. And it was shot particuarly well.

Default Love this movie.

I think this is one of the most brilliant films made in the last decade. It's not your usual Coen brothers film, but you would have to watch their first production Blood Simple to see where No Country is coming from. It's also set in Texas and has the same sort of somber, but rivetting, tone.
I think the point of No Country is that violence is fruitless. The good guy dies, the bad guy gets away, and the sheriff never gets his man. Violence only leads to more violence, money or no money.
If you want, you can read my review on it for more details and a better perspective on where I'm going with this.
