Parenthood (1989)

Ron Howard's 1989 hit, written by fellow family men Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (Splash, A League of Their Own), is an original comedy about contemporary life and the eternal responsibilities of raising children. Steve Martin has never been better than as a dedicated husband and father trying (and inevitably failing, as do most of us) to balance the demands of his kids and his job. The actor, like his character, throws himself into the part quite touchingly, never more so than in a scene where a hired clown fails to show up at a children's party and Martin's character unabashedly provides the entertainment. This was a nice surprise, I had heard of this film but never knew anything about it. I saw the cast list and was blown away by the level of talent involved in this picture so I knew that it was worth a shot watching and it turned out to be a really entertaining and well put together film.

How cool would it be to have a little kid named Cool? Probably not much since the kid would grow up to hate you for the name.
PARENTHOOD is one of those generational comedies about family, life, love and all that other nonsense. However, it never really delves into the sentimental crap that many other movies of this genre...
