Hairspray (1988)
From Amazon:
John Waters made his bid for PG respectability with this enjoyably trashy comedy about the racial integration of a teen dance show on Baltimore television in the early '60s. Waters, as always, makes a virtue of junk culture and the powerful emotional forces it can represent as kids vie to get on the show. Meanwhile, a parade of former stars (Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono) and pseudostars (Divine, Ricki Lake) cross the screen, playing freakish characters absorbed by thoughts of fame. (Waters himself turns up as a weirdo psychiatrist.) This transitional film for Waters is rough going at times and not as interesting or funny as his later...

It is hard to believe that we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of this film this week. It is even harder to believe that just one week after it opened Divine left the world's stage forever.

Why I think John Travolta did great dancing in heels. i think there is entirely TO MUCH singing in this one!!! I like the original better. I do like the fact that some of the original cast members are in this movie, but i do not like the changed ending. If you are gonna remke it remake make the whole thing the same!!!

4 stars, yep it gets 4 stars...why I hear you say, well my reasons are 3 fold #1. I have zero desire to see the new incarnation of Hairspray (ya know, the one with Johnny-boy all dolled up). I prefer to relish my memories of this 1980's John Water's classic. Never have I had so much fun while contemplating a serious issue. This time around the issue is tolerance. I see this film as sort of a peek...

Who loves the underdog you ask? Everyone but the perfect people. For the rest of us there are great characters to soothe our own quirks. This movie is great for those who truly do not believe they fit in anywhere ie...all of us. John Waters has taken the need for acceptance put it through the ringer and hung it to dry.
