Weeds (1987)

A depressed man in prison for a life time sentence tries to commit
suicide multiple times. After his last attempt, another inmate suggests
that he start reading books to do something else with his time. Inspired
by what he reads, he writes a play about being in prison, gathering a
cast of inmates and getting the attention of a female reporter who
helps to get the newly minted playwright paroled. Things are very
different on the outside and when he attempts to put on the play again,
drastic changes must be made to reflect those differences.
