Around the time that this movie came out, people were talking a lot about Rocky Dennis' mother. She was a big time alcoholic and recovering (supposedly) drug addict who had a severely disfigured son that she supposedly neglected. People made a lot of judgments about her and whether or not she was softened up in the movie...
