Gremlins (1984)
description written by member Tim:
A man meets an Asian man who sells him a Mogwai for his sons Christmas present. The man explains that no matter what the Mogwai must not have any water, no food after midnight, and no bright lights. The little boy violates a couple of the rules and this makes the Mogwai spawn evil creatures called Gremlins.

A cute little stuffed animal with big eyes is the perfect marketing tool. Make a bunch of them and they'll sell faster than that odd looking alien with the glowing heart. Just make sure you tell the family movie going audience that this is really a light weight horror flick. I mean... they should expect it, but still.
