Warner Bros. agreed to finance this $11 million production on the condition that KUBRICK cast a Top 10 Box-Office Star (of their choice) in the title role.

With RYAN O'NEAL (unfortunately) being the #2 box-office star at the time (1973), it was either him, ROBERT REDFORD, CLINT EASTWOOD, or (get this) BURT REYNOLDS who...

Despite being nominated for four of the "minor" Oscars in 1976, this film has been largely overlooked - even by fans of director Stanley Kubrick. Beautifully filmed, well-acted and highly entertaining, this is one of the best period pieces I've ever seen.
