Catfish in Black Bean Sauce (1999)

Cultures not only clash, they wage war in this touching comedy-drama about family dynamics. Dwayne and Mai, a Vietnamese brother and sister who were adopted in childhood by an African-American couple, face new crises as adults. Dwayne wants to propose to Nina, his beautiful black girlfriend, and Mai has just located her birth mother, Thahn. Writer-director Chi Moui Lo also plays Dwayne.

Not a great movie but not a poor one either. It's just poorly constructed and sloppily edited. The acting is top notch, however, mostly making up for the spotty script. The writer/director/star Chi Moui Lo means well, and for the most part I admire what he's tried to do here.
