I'm not sure what director Todd Haynes ("Far from Heaven") is trying to accomplish with "I'm Not There", his new biography, of sorts, of Bob Dylan.

I was thrilled by Todd Haynes work on Glam Rock in Velvet Goldmine, and I looked forward to a film about Robert Allen Zimmerman (possibly a cousin).
I was more intrigued about the fact that favs like Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, and Cate Blanchette, and others would be playing different parts of Dylan. Leave it to Haynes...

This is a considered, well acted, smartly written piece and the dialogue is smart and telling. Some of the performances are perfection. Kate Blanchett is brilliant but Christian Bale is wasted and Juliannne Moore is annoying as the Joan Baez stand-in. Unfortunately, the good does not overcome the failures in this...
