Eastern Promises (2007)

The new thriller from director David Cronenberg reteams him with his "A History of Violence" leading man Viggo Mortensen. The film follows the mysterious and ruthless Nikolai (Mr. Mortensen), who is tied to one of London's most notorious organized crime families. His carefully maintained existence is jarred when he crosses paths with Anna (Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts), an innocent midwife trying to right a wrong, who accidentally uncovers potential evidence against the family. Now Nikolai must put into motion a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution.

Cronenberg, you're kinda like the poor man's Scorsese. People will get that joke coming from me only if they understand that I think Cronenberg, much like Scorsese, is given far too much automatic credit without always delivering the goods.
But that's as far as I'll go in comparisons since the C man has been known to turn...

Finally, a film to make me enjoy Cronenberg again. You see, I was weaned on the t*t of his 70's and 80's era horror films, and ever since CRASH, I have felt left out in the cold by him. Even his well received HISTORY OF VIOLENCE caused nary a stir in me.
