Romance & Cigarettes (2007)
description written by member Zara:
Romance and Cigarettes is a down-and-dirty musical love story set in the world of the working class. Nick (Gandolfini) is an ironworker who builds and repairs bridges. He's married to Kitty (Sarandon), a dressmaker, a strong and gentle woman with whom he has three daughters. He is carrying on a torrid affair with a redheaded woman named Tula (Winslet). Nick is basically a good, hardworking man driven forward by will and blinded by his urges. Like Oedipus at Colonus, he is sent into exile and searches to find his way back through the damage he has done. In an imaginative, humorous, and touching way, Romance and Cigarettes explores the cost and value of a relationship through life and death. When the characters can no longer express themselves with language, they break into song, lip-synching the tunes lodged in their subconscious. It is their way to escape the harsh reality of their world - to dream, to remember, and to connect to another human being.

This is not your daddy's rom-com. Quirky and funny and certainly musical. It is what you would expect from working-class New Yorkers. Full of energy and feeling and expression, this movie is just the ticket for those who see romance in a cloud of smoke.
Imagine Kate Winslet saying to James Gandolfini, "I want you to put...

You'll have to pardon me, but I'm a little bit moist right now.
I never fancied myself attracted to Kate Winslet in the past, but as a redhead in this flick with a hardcore (the ManPerson and I argued over whether it was a c*ckney or Irish accent. He says the former, I say the latter) accent and a dirty mouth to boot,...

'Romance and Cigarettes' is a bizarre musical, where recognizable stars sing along to pop songs and even dance, quite competently on both counts, which really surprised me, but then I never knew if any of them possessed any talents like this. Except for Christopher Walken, who demonstrated his abilities in Hairspray and a...

Originally scheduled for release in 2005, writer and director John Turturro had to fight many battles along the way to finally get this bawdy musical-drama in theaters. Produced by the Coen Brothers, the film is a combination of pulp fiction, working-class malaise, over-the-top comedy, and some touching dramatic moments....

What a mess!
I was wondering why a film with so many great actors and such a promising director and producers would be stalled before release and given the TV treatment, and then I saw it.
This film is a bungled mess of trying to be a musical where people don't really sing, a drama where we don't understand anyone's...
