Dogfight (1991)

The story of three Marine buddies and their last night onshore before being shipped over for the Vietnam war. The group prepare to go to a "Dogfight" where they have to find the ugliest woman possible to go with them to a Marine dance. Along the way, one of them falls in love with the girl he chooses to take.

Watching this movie makes me mad. Not exactly the emotion that the director was going for, I'm sure, since DOGFIGHT is a romance. But through every scene with River Phoenix, I feel angry with him for f*cking up his life and robbing cinema of his wonderful, natural talent. He has a way to him which his younger brother...

I remember seeing this movie as a young larger teen girl with serious body issues and loving it. Loving the idea that though we might be seen a certain way by certain boys, with time and with knowledge of one another real love can blossom where we have may never thought possible.
River Phoenix and Lili Taylor are lovely...
