Freedom Writers is not just a movie to me, but an experience. It expresses content that is real to people, the subject of school, being afraid of whats on the other side of your front door, and the feeling of giving up. Throughout, there are moments of extreme inspiration and emotion. Actually, some tear jerking moments...

There are certain genres of film that should be retired until they come up with a completely original story. Case and point: The "Inspirational Teacher" genre has been around for decades and recently we have seen one or more of these stories every year, most often in January. Yes we have been there and done that when it comes to well-intentioned teachers coming to the ghetto and finding the diamonds in the rough, and though this film is heart-warming and genuine in a way the others aren't, it isn't exactly re-inventing the wheel.
At least with 'Dangerous Minds' there was a sweet soundtrack...
