The Holiday (2006)
"The Holiday" centers on an American woman (Diaz) with man troubles who crosses paths with a British villager (Winslet) with similar problems. n writer/director Nancy Meyers' (Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want) The Holiday, two women on opposite sides of the globe, Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz) and Iris Simpkins (Kate Winslet) find themselves in a similar predicament. Now I know a lot of you may say it's a chick flick. Others may say I'll watch it for my girl. Listen, this is not at all the case. This is a brilliant film. I went kicking and screaming with my wife to this film to do just what I said you will do, watch it for your girl. It's nothing like that though.

OK, so it is a chick flick. That doesn't mean it's bad, or that it is not worth your time.
In this case there was a lot more going on.
Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz were absolutely great as women trying to find themselves. I could not imagine better casting in these roles. I was impressed with both performances.

First, just let me tell you that I haven't been "into" Jude Law at all in his previous roles and I find him to be arrogant and didn't find him to be much to look at...until this role. I really liked him as the sincere type of emotional single dad type of guy. Jack Black, whom I know isn't the favorite of quite a few people...

There are two stories at work in Nancy Meyer's new film "The Holiday". One of these stories works, only occasionally veering into sitcom territory. The other stays firmly rooted in sitcom purgatory. I'm a straight male and I like chick flicks. That's right, I said it. Hey, I'll give the writer/director Nancy Meyers her due credit. She's done some great work in the genre. Private Benjamin, Father of the Bride and What Women Want were all really enjoyable.
