  The Proposition (2006)

In this uncompromising Australian period drama, conscience competes with loyalty and love spurs revenge. Three brothers fight for their place in a beautiful, brutal landscape, but one must be forsaken to save another in the unconscionable "Proposition". Set in the 1880s, the film opens in the middle of a frenzied gunfight between the police and a gang of outlaws. Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) and his brother Mikey are captured by Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone). Together with their formidable brother Arthur (Danny Huston), they are wanted for a brutal crime. Stanley makes Charlie a seemingly impossible proposition in an attempt to bring an end to the cycle of turmoil. (read more)

The Proposition Movie Review by Matthew (5/17/2006)

Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce), a cowboy roaming the Australian outback in the early part of the 20th Century, and his younger brother, Mike (Richard Wilson) are captured at a wh*rehouse, after a bloody gunfight, by the new lawman in town, Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone). Charlie and his three brothers committed a particularly...

The Proposition Movie Review by Chris (10/26/2008)

'The Proposition' is one of the darkest, most violent western films I have ever seen. Shot in Austrailia, directed by John Hillcoat and starring Guy Pearce and Ray Winstone, 'The Proposition' is a great movie. As Ben had pointed out in his review, the cinematography is amazing. There is a lot of desolate feelings here and...

The Proposition Movie Review by Movie Addict (4/7/2008)

The cinematography, music, and costuming in this dark western from Australia make it worth watching.

There is not a lot of dialog except for Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone) and Eden Fletcher (David Wenham). Well, we mustn't forget the drunken Jellon Lamb (John Hurt). He did tend to rattle on a bit. I really can't square...

The Proposition Movie Review by Ezra (3/12/2007)

Talk about revitalizing a genre! This is by far the best and most realistic Western in years, if not of all time. I'm not particularly a fan of the genre, though I have loved a few - Unforgiven, The Searchers, The Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid come to mind, and Jim Jarmusch's revisionist Dead Man is one...

The Proposition Movie Review by Wes (3/5/2007)

This was the best film of 2005. A dirty, dark western that came from Austrailia. Everything about this movie is perfect. The story, the cinematography, the acting, everything is spot on. It's not really a movie, it's an experience.

The story starts with a gunfight between the Australian "police" and a group of...
