Brick (2006)
Brendan Fry is a loner at his high school, someone who knows all the angles but has chosen to stay on the outside. When the girl he loves turns up dead, he plunges into the school's social strata like a fist through a honeycomb to find the "who" and "why," with the same single-minded devotion to his self-appointed task as the hard-boiled heroes of old. I didn't get it.
I mean, I got it, but I didn't get it. I didn't get why everyone was ranting and raving about how good this movie was. A pretentious piece of I don't know what, making me sad that Levitt was in the movie. A stylized teenage noir?
How about slow, plodding, convoluted and just plain ridiculous. Give me...

There's something to be said for the talent of first-time director Rian Johnson. His visuals are fantastic, and he has definite style...but, unfortunately, there's a lot lacking in Brick, a serious-minded but rather wacky look at the quest of one teenager to find out who killed the girl he loved filtered through the lens...
