  Rize (2005)

"Rize" reveals a groundbreaking dance phenomenon that's exploding on the streets of South Central, Los Angeles. Taking advantage of unprecedented access, this documentary film brings to first light a revolutionary form of artistic expression borne from oppression. The aggressive and visually stunning dance modernizes moves indigenous to African tribal rituals and features mind-blowing, athletic movement sped up to impossible speeds. "Rize" tracks the fascinating evolution of the dance: we meet Tommy Johnson, who first created the style as a response to the 1992 Rodney King riots and named it "Clowning", as well as the kids who developed the movement into what they now call Krumping. Rize Movie Review by Seth C (8/4/2006)

I find dancing to be incredibly stupid; in my eyes dancing looks ridiculous unless it's a group of people doing the exact same dance moves at the exact same time. So why would I rent "Rize," a documentary by famed video director David LaChepelle that is strictly about the art of krump dancing clowns?

Mainly, because every...

Rize Movie Review by Corey (6/24/2005)

Throughout the annals of human history, social unrest has led to violent civil eruption and action. The flip side of that bloody coin is that this unrest can also create important artistic movements; the necessary outlets that will forever serve as artifacts and reminders of the anger that bore their fruit. It is this...

Rize Movie Review by Jessica Film Junkie (8/13/2007)

David LaChapelle is famous for being a brilliant music video director and photographer. With this documentary following the lives of krumpers and clowns in the ghetto of Los Angeles, he steps outside of those comfort zones to try his hand at features.

The film features some amazing dancing, but what makes it particularly...

Rize Movie Review by Ezra (2/13/2007)

This is one of the most fun movies of 2005, a visual and sensual feast with some of the most incredible physical feats ever caught on film, but these are not trained dancers or performers - just kids from the slums. The opening disclaimer that none of the images in the film have been sped up will be hard to believe at...

Rize Movie Review by Lance (6/24/2005)

New in the art houses: "Rize", a documentary from fashion photographer David LaChapelle that tries to capture the 'war' between two styles of street dance "Clowning" and "Krumping". Unfortunately, LaChapelle is beaten to the punch by the makers of "Be Cool". The kids that LaChapple 'discovers' on the streets of L.A. are...
