  Shopgirl (2005)

Based on Steve Martin's bestselling novella, "Shopgirl" is a funny and poignant story of love in the modern age. Mirabelle mans the glove counter at a high end department store in Beverly Hills, selling things that nobody buys anymore. An artist struggling to keep up with even the minimum payment on her credit card and student loans, she lives a quiet life and keeps to herself until a rich, handsome fiftysomething named Ray Porter sweeps her off her feet. Mirabelle revels in the attention, the sex, and especially, being in love, but somewhere, subconsciously, she realizes that the relationship cannot last. Soon, she has to make a decision: will she stick with Ray, hoping that his feelings for her might grow, or does she take a chance with Jeremy, a musician who may offer more? (read more)

Shopgirl Movie Review by Thom (4/11/2008)

Clearly Steve Martin was paying attention to the world around him as he passed through it. Based on his best-selling novella and written for the screen by him, Shopgirl plays out as if it were a reflection of fond memories and mistakes made, both accepted as a necessary part of life. An intensely personal piece of work by...

Shopgirl Movie Review by Movie Addict (10/20/2007)

Some compare this to Lost in Translation. I had to watch that film three times before I really enjoyed it. I can say that I enjoyed Steve Martin's story on the first viewing.

I actually tuned in to see if Jason Schwartzman was as obnoxious as I have seen him in other films. I was pleasantly surprised. I could not under...

Shopgirl Movie Review by Jessica Film Junkie (3/5/2007)

An odd little movie about a girl, Mirabelle Buttersfield (Claire Danes), who works in the gloves department of Saks Fifth Avenue in LA. The story starts out well enough, Mirabelle has an odd encounter with a strange young man, Jeremy (the incomparable Jason Schwartzman), who then sets out to find himself as a roadie. She...

Shopgirl Movie Review by Emily (2/7/2007)

Mirabelle Buttersfield (Claire Danes) is a charming Vemront girl who has moved to New York in hopes of having a more interesting life, however, she is neglected by so many of life's exciting turns. That is, until she runs in to an adorably pathetic man, Jeremy (Jason Schwartzmann), in a laundromat. He immediately asks for...

Shopgirl Movie Review by Kimberly (4/29/2006)

"Shopgirl" – Rated R, 104 minutes (***)

Sometimes the best love stories are the ones without love in them at all. Unfortunately for some of us, those are the also sometimes the most revealing.

It's a prevalent contention of mine that most women go through what I call the "older man" phase. I did. And I learned a...
