Shopgirl (2005)
Based on Steve Martin's bestselling novella, "Shopgirl" is a funny and poignant story of love in the modern age. Mirabelle mans the glove counter at a high end department store in Beverly Hills, selling things that nobody buys anymore. An artist struggling to keep up with even the minimum payment on her credit card and student loans, she lives a quiet life and keeps to herself until a rich, handsome fiftysomething named Ray Porter sweeps her off her feet. Mirabelle revels in the attention, the sex, and especially, being in love, but somewhere, subconsciously, she realizes that the relationship cannot last. Soon, she has to make a decision: will she stick with Ray, hoping that his feelings for her might grow, or does she take a chance with Jeremy, a musician who may offer more? (read more)

Some compare this to Lost in Translation. I had to watch that film three times before I really enjoyed it. I can say that I enjoyed Steve Martin's story on the first viewing.

When Steve Martin is not polluting the local cinema with cinematic cancer such as "Cheaper by the Dozen" or the cleverly titled "Cheaper by the Dozen 2", he's writing novels. Not only writing them, but turning them into films. This one is entitled "Shopgirl" and has been adapted to the big screen with Martin himself, also...

Mirabelle (Claire Danes), an artist who has moved to Los Angeles from Vermont, works at the glove counter at Saks Fifth Avenue. She stands at her station, day in and day out, watching the beautiful people spend a lot of money on the expensive dresses displayed around her. After work, she makes the trek back to her small...

Clearly Steve Martin was paying attention to the world around him as he passed through it. Based on his best-selling novella and written for the screen by him, Shopgirl plays out as if it were a reflection of fond memories and mistakes made, both accepted as a necessary part of life. An intensely personal piece of work by...
