  Hustle & Flow (2005)

Djay is a pimp suffering a midlife crisis, yearning to be a rap star, and after being galvanized by a gospel song, he gets to work, finding it a very hard road to fame and respect. "Hustle & Flow" is the redemptive story of a streetwise Memphis hustler trying to find his voice and realize his long-buried dreams. Though DJay has always had a way with words, that gift has long been misused; this philosopher-hustler lives a dead-end life at the fringes of society. Anything more feels out of reach. Still, DJay wonders what happened to all the big dreams he had for his life. A chance encounter with an old friend, Key, a sound engineer who has always wanted to make it in the music business, spurs DJay: if he's ever going to make his mark, it has to happen now. This led to intense performances in Crash and Ray in 2004. In Hustle & Flow, he had a break-out performance as a two-bit pimp who...

Hustle & Flow Movie Review by Zara (1/25/2007)

Honestly, how else would an actor be able to get you to like a pimp so damn much? Not that he's a successful pimp. Running a small group of women, one of which has a small child, one of which is out of commission due to a pregnancy and one of which is an empty-headed little white girl who brings home most of the bacon,...

Hustle & Flow Movie Review by AJ (4/14/2006)

If you think rap music is a braindead, soulless enterprise requiring little to no talent, I've a hunch this highly impressive second feature from writer-director Brewer will completely blow your mind. With the gritty, grungy vibes of an underground 70's flick, Hustle & Flow is an authentic-feeling tale of a pimp who...

Hustle & Flow Movie Review by Matthew (7/25/2005)

Admittedly, I am not the ideal demographic for "Hustle and Flow", the new film about a Memphis pimp who dreams of becoming a rap singer. But because of the good reviews I have read, I decided to give the film a try.

"Hustle and Flow" written and directed by Craig Brewer, contains many good things. D Jay (Terrence Howard,...
