Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

From Amazon: In the capable hands of director Peter Weir, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a seafaring adventure like no other, impeccably authentic, dynamically cast, and thrilling enough to give any classic swashbuckler a run for its money. In adapting two of Patrick O'Brian's enormously popular novels about British naval hero Capt. Jack Aubrey, Weir and cowriter John Collee have changed the timeframe from the British/American war of 1812 to the British/French opposition of 1805, where the HMS Surprise, under Aubrey's confident command, is patrolling the South Atlantic in pursuit of the Acheron, a French warship...

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World Movie Review by Justin (3/5/2006)

Inspired more by historical mindfulness than by the Hollywood dollar, Peter Weir's epic is handsome, bold, and uncommonly intelligent. The picture is mounted on familiar notions of friendship, honor, and loyalty, but it works in and through these themes in decidedly natural ways -- 'what happens next' is persistently hard...

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World Movie Review by Javi (3/12/2007)

I wasn't at all sure about this movie. As a disclaimer I'll be honest, Russell Crowe is not my favorite actor. No matter how great his role or acting, the fact that it's him takes away something from it in my eyes. It's a personal bias I know but what are you gonna do about it?

In regard to this movie, I have to say I...

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World Movie Review by Ash (10/24/2006)

Review originally written 12/7/2003

If you're prepared for a long, involved drama of Napoleonic sea farers as opposed to the high adventure antics of Pirates of the Caribbean, you really should love this film.

Unfortunately, the studios marketed this film as a big action film ("Gladiator on water"), and most of the...
