Epic Action Drama. Set in Japan during the 1870s, The Last Samurai tells the story of Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a respected American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the Emperor attempts to eradicate the ancient Imperial Samurai warriors in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly government policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his own sense of honor to guide him. Leaving a screening of "The Last Samurai," my friend said he thought it should be considered a Japanese film. Funny comment, but also a keen observation. There's nary a strand of Americana to be found in the whole picture. It's a big studio epic, but full of unexpected intelligence and sensitivity. Edward Zwick & co....

It's a shame that this film was hollywoodized because it had potential to be perfect. It fell slightly below that line though, with a still amazing rating from me. This film, although historically incorrect in many ways, still has an excellent storyline and is so pleasing to watch. It's absolutely gorgeous and the Japanese...

The Last Samurai is probably not for everyone. Japanese culture is almost impossible to understand to the western mindset. Feudal Japanese culture is even more difficult. Even though director Edward Zwick does a good job watering most of it down for western audiences, that's just...
