As noted by Zara this isn't a zombie movie, although the majority of the public perceive it as a "zombie" movie (bloody uncultured heathens).
So as the opening credits are rolling we are shown images of animal activists breaking into an animal testing facility in which a virus known as "rage" is being tested on chimps....

If you have seen 'Shallow Grave' and 'Trainspotting' you know that there is a darker side to Danny Boyle (despite 'Millions'), but he is also an extremely talented filmmaker. You see, he doesn't have the power of say Cameron Crowe who is able to clear Times Square so Tom Cruise can have a frightening dream.
