Monster's Ball (2001)
From Amazon:
The unflinching realism and searing performances of Monster's Ball are stunning in all the connotations of the word. Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and Leticia (Halle Berry) inhabit stark, queasy realities of the contemporary South, he as a death row corrections officer and she as the soon-to-be widow of an inmate (Sean Combs) whose execution Hank helps conduct. In the aftermath of the execution, both lose their children to tragic deaths and they form an unlikely bond. In the hands of lesser participants, the fateful plot might strain credibility and seem tailored to allow for liberal sermonizing about the obvious wrongs of our legal...

Again, another example of a movie that was supposed to make me feel moved because a beautiful actress decided to get ugly. I never really understood why there was such a draw for that kind of thing. Then again, I don't understand why retarded characters are always considered Oscar worthy either.

Trying to sell Berry as a poor, Southern wife of a man who's been on death row for eleven years while she's been trying...

A dysfunctional family of Georgia rednecks. Pop and two sons who have spent their lives a prison guards. Pop Buck (Peter Boyle) is a hard case redneck whose wife left him by committing suicide. #1 son Hank (Billy Bob Thorton) learned his racist beliefs at pop's knee. The other son Sonny (Heath Ledger) is hated by Pop...

One of the greatest endings ever written. This film is highlighted by raw performances and a truly amazing original screenplay. This movie wouldn't work if there weren't such vulnerable characters which we could empathize with during the film. They all make some horrible decisions and they all have something terrible...
