SLC Punk starts out entertainingly enough as a sarcastic snapshot of the punk-rock scene in Salt Lake City in 1985--complete with mohawks, moshing, and vague avowals of anarchy. But gradually, the wanderings of Stevo (Matthew Lillard from Scream) and Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian) turn into a multilayered exploration of character and culture shock. I've noticed that people either love or hate this movie. Told from the perspective of a young degenerent living in Salt Lake City, Utah, (not exactly the mecca for the punk mentality) there isn't much that goes on. Its no secret that James Merendino created this movie from some of his own memories of growing up as a punk in Salt Lake City Utah, Mormon town USA. One of the things I loved was that he chose to shoot the entire film in SLC, which is quite rare these days. My reasons for loving this movie are similar to Merendino's...

Stevo (Matthew Lillard) and his best friend Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian), who is ironically terrified of needles, and therefore doesn't do heroin, lead a life of rebellion, drugs, alcohol, drugs, sex, and did I mention drugs? They strive to show people what it means to be a real pink, and that they are a dying breed....
