Saying that a movie is "based on a true story" is often misleading, especially when, if you think about it, any story is based on actual events. In the case of The Insider, all the important details are pretty much spot on, while those that are disputed can be puzzled out by merely looking at the motives of those involved....

Jeffrey Wigand (Russel Crowe) put it all on the line: his family, he reputation, his career, and his life. He had a story to tell about the addictive properties of tobacco and it was eating at him until he got it out. Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) of CBS News went to bat and did everything in his power to get his story out....
