Girl, Interrupted (1999)

Based on Susanna Kaysen's acclaimed journal-memoir, Girl, Interrupted bears inevitable resemblance to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and pale comparison to that earlier classic is impossible to avoid. The mental institution settings of both films guarantee a certain degree of déjà vu and at least one Oscar winner (in this case, Angelina Jolie), since playing a loony is any actor's dream gig. Seeing this film reminds me of everything that is wrong with adults. They confuse spontaneity and originality and discovering yourself with mental illness. Act out a little in school, and it's ADHD. Act out at home, and it's bring on the Prozac.

Angelina Jolie MADE this film. If she hadn't been in it, it would have faltered. She may be a supporting character but it is by far her most poignant and rousing performance she's done in a film to date - other than her even more remarkable turn as Gia Marie Carangie in the film 'Gia'.
