City of Angels (1998)

Some critics complained that City of Angels could never compare to Wim Wenders's exquisite German film Wings of Desire, which served as the later film's primary inspiration. The better argument to make is that any such comparisons are beside the point, because Wings of Desire was a much more deeply poetic, artfully contemplative film, whereas City of Angels is an enchanting product of mainstream Hollywood. People tend to either love or hate this film...the reason for this is not the film, but the studio. Not knowing what to do with a film that explored humanity from a spiritual context...the studio went with a romanatic pitch. And such there is a romance here, but this film is far more then Maggie and Seth's relationship....
