U Turn (1997)

Oliver Stone used such words as "liberating" and "fun" to talk about U Turn's relatively quick production schedule of 42 days. Stone's ideas of film fun, however, are something older generations would call sick. This film is a Southwestern noir tale about Bobby Cooper (Sean Penn), a hotshot who is stuck in the tight confines of Superior, Arizona, when his car breaks down. His subsequent adventure is a meatball comedy--loud, obnoxious, and violent, and stuffed with diffused light, a hot cast, and a no-fat Ennio Morricone score. I do not like Oliver Stone's work. I've tried watching almost everything that he's done but I just can't get into his style. I find it over-stylized and over-bearing, taking some great talent and putting them through the wringer until you can't recognize them any more. Plus he hasn't seemed to grab the concept that a movie...

One of Oliver Stone's weakest films, in terms of story and appeal. Stone has the talent to make a great movie like he has before (Platoon, JFK) but every director has a weak point in his career and it's safe to say U Turn is Oliver Stone's weak point.
Sean Penn gives a decent performance and the supporting cast is not...
