Open Your Eyes (Abre los ojos) (1997)
description written by member Andy:
What is real and what is fake? Open Your Eyes poses this question to
the main character, César. The young man has everything in the world
until one of his one night stands attempts to kill him by driving into
a wall while César's in her car. The crash leaves the girl dead and
César horribly disfigured. César must then deal with a world disgusted
by his mangled features. He sets on a destructive course that alienates
his best friend and potential true love. When his life seems to have hit
bottom the girl of his dreams takes him into her arms and his doctors
are able to mend his shattered face. All too good to be true? How can
César's luck change so quickly? César himself asks these questions. The answers bring him to brink of madness and eventually to the question of
reality itself in this dark and twisted thriller.

In the US this film's only existence is that of being the original film of which Vanilla Sky is remake of. As in about 99% of the cases, the original is better. Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise took virtually the exact same idea, but made it more of movie about romance. Open Your Eyes is very much a thriller. It's dark and...
