The King's Whore (1990)
description written by member DameAlys:
The head of a kingdom in late 18-century Italy takes a fancy to his
chamberlain's wife, and demands she become his mistress. She is forced
to submit, but at a price that destroys them both. This unorthodox
exploration of the themes of identity, power, and love proved too
subtle, and perhaps too uncomfortably subversive of politically correct
intellectual fashions, to find an audience, following its debut at
Cannes, where reviewers failed to appreciate its complex erotic appeal.
Difficult to find now, it benefits from repeated viewings, partly
because of editing almost too taut for clarity, but mainly because it
treats serious themes both compassionately and philosophically--perhaps
too much so, for viewers in our cynical, anti-intellectual age. With an
excellent cast, all in top form.
