The Element Of Crime (1984)
Danish director Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves) made his directorial debut (in English) with this bizarre combination of film noir, science fiction and surrealism. In a post-holocaust future (depicted in striking sepia tones), a serial killer is preying on teenage girls. The stymied detective on the case (Michael Elphick) submits to a special form of hypnosis to improve his chances of catching the culprit. (read more)
