August Boasts Actor Birthdays

Some years are bigger and better than others when it comes to movie premiers and pictures becoming classics. That got me to thinking about actors and actresses and their birthdays. Naturally, people celebrate birthdays every month, some are famous too. But I noticed that August seems to have a lot of birthdays for a lot of people in the movies. Co-incidence or is it simply who-knows-what? I began to look at several places to gather information about this and came up with some famous names and faces – in and out of Show Business. But my column has limited space and I'd prefer to concentrate on the people we all know and love – inside Show Business, especially the movies.

Born on August 1, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, was Dom DeLuise, beloved actor, comedian and entertainer. Peter James O'Toole, one of the movies best ever, was born on August 2, 1932 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Carroll O'Connor, who created some wonderful movie roles and his own immortal Archie Bunker,
was born on August 2, 1924 in New York City. Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez, better known as Martin Sheen, was born August 3, 1940 in Dayton, Ohio. Louis Armstrong, the immortal trumpeter and actor was born on August 4, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Billy Bob Thornton, who has created some amazing characters in the movies and on television was born August 4, 1955 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. John Marcellus Huston, actor and movie director was born August 5, 1906 in Nevada, Missouri. Lucille Ball, model, actress and television pioneer (she headed her own production company), was born August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. Robert (Charles Durman) Mitchum was born August 6, 1917 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. On August 7, 1975 Charlize Theron, Oscar-winning actress, makes her real-life debut. Alfred Hitchcock, who created some of the most unique, timeless and scariest movies, was born on August 13, 1899 in Leytonstone, Essex, England.

Here's a partial list of some other famous
actors and actresses in August:
August 9, 1944 Sam Elliott August 9, 1957 Melanie Griffith August 9, 1968 Gillian Anderson August 10, 1923 Rhonda Fleming August 10, 1911 Jane Wyatt August 10, 1960 Antonio Banderas August 12, 1939 George Hamilton August 13, 1904- Buddy Rogers August 14, 1968 Halle Berry August 15, 1972 Ben Affleck August 16, 1928 Ann Blyth August 17, 1920 Maureen O'Hara August 17, 1943 Robert De Niro August 18, 1922 Shelley Winters August 18, 1937 Robert Redford August 18, 1954 Patrick Swayze August 18, 1958 Madeleine Stowe August 20, 1956 Joan Allen August 22, 1940 Valerie Harper August 23, 1912 Gene Kelly August 23, 1929 Vera Miles August 25, 1930 Sean Connery August 27, 1916 Martha Raye August 28, 1889 Charles Boyer August 28, 1925 Donald O'Connor August 28, 1930 Ben Gazzara August 29, 1915
Ingrid Bergman August 29, 1938 Elliott Gould August 30, 1898 Shirley Booth August 31, 1897 Frederic March August 31, 1924 Buddy Hackett August 31, 1928 James Coburn August 31, 1949 Richard Gere

O.K., it's more than possible, I agree, that the other 11 months will also show how many great performers were born in those months too. But, I've done the research and August seems to have produced more than an average amount of the names we know and admire when it comes to the movies. Creating memorable roles that live forever is no small feat. Look at the names I've listed and you will (I hope) be reminded of movies and characters we never tire of. Many of these names are associated with multiple parts over many years.

I find films endlessly fascinating, no matter the plots, people or places in which they occur. I hope I've prompted you to create your own lists. Like so many of the things we enjoy in life, these are treasures to be watched many, many times throughout the years.

I am a former New Jersey native, living in Charlotte, N.C. for almost 29 years. I am a lifelong movie lover with lots of movie trivia knowledge and soundtracks in my CD collection. I enjoy sharing my love of films with everyone and have so many fond memories growing up in darkened movie theaters. I have been married 50 years (as of December 22, 2018) and we both share a passion for film (and each other of course).
