Still Going Strong After All These Years

So, my birthday is in a couple of days, and around this time I often reflect on that fateful year, 1978. And, coincidentally, I frequently think about years in terms of movies. I've written columns about notable films and film events from that year, but I thought now I'd focus on actors who, three and a half decades later, are impressively still working consistently and, in some case, maybe more popular than ever.

John Travolta
1978 film: GREASE

Love him or hate him (I'm probably more so in the latter category), Travolta is still out there making movies. He should probably be giving a large chunk of his salary to Quentin Tarantino for rescuing him from the dregs of the LOOK WHO'S TALKING movies.

Personal favorite: PULP FICTION

Clint Eastwood
1978 film: EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE

Politics aside, tough-guy Eastwood continues to be an iconic actor and director.

Personal favorite: IN THE LINE OF FIRE

Robert DeNiro
1978 film: THE DEER
HUNTER

Possibly America's greatest living actor, DeNiro's film role choices lately haven't been the best (like those horrible Fockers films), but with SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, he proves he still has some juice left.

Personal favorite: THE KING OF COMEDY

Michael Caine
1978 film: CALIFORNIA SUITE

Even at almost 80 years old, Caine keeps churning out the films.

Personal favorite: THE CIDER HOUSE RULES; (A close second is BLAME IT ON RIO, but not for him so much)

Jamie Lee Curtis
1978 film: HALLOWEEN

Although maybe better known now as the yogurt lady, Curtis continues to work regularly (pun intended), though she mostly seems to do TV now.

Personal favorite: HALLOWEEN

Donald Sutherland
1978 films: INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, ANIMAL HOUSE

Sutherland most recently appeared as the frightening President Snow in THE HUNGER GAMES.

Personal favorite: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER

Christopher Walken
1978 film: THE DEER
HUNTER

Maybe the most imitated actor in Hollywood, the unusual Walken continues to make multiple films a year.

Personal favorite: THE DEAD ZONE; (His small role in ANNIE HALL is a close second)

Tommy Lee Jones
1978 films: EYES OF LAURA MARS, THE BETSY

The perpetually dour Jones just got a ton of acting nominations for his role in LINCOLN.

Personal favorite: THE FUGITIVE

Meryl Streep
1978 film: THE DEER HUNTER

Though in her mid-60s, Streep makes films every year and seems to get nominated for an Oscar every year.

Personal favorite: FANTASTIC MR. FOX; (Okay, it's just her voice, but I haven't seen a ton of her other films)

Jeff Goldblum
1978 films: INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY, REMEMBER BY NAME

The eccentric Goldblum seems to mostly do TV these days, and his cameos on the great Portlandia have been funny.

Personal favorite: JURASSIC PARK

Susan Sarandon
1978 films: PRETTY BABY, KING
OF THE GYPSIES

The still radiant Sarandon has eight, count 'em, eight, films planned for 2013.

Personal favorite: IGBY GOES DOWN

Sylvester Stallone
1978 films: F.I.S.T., PARADISE ALLEY

Unfortunately the barely intelligible Stallone just won't go away and he has several movies in the works.

Personal favorite: ROCKY

Richard Gere
1978 films: BLOODBROTHERS, DAYS OF HEAVEN

Gere was just nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in ARBITRAGE.

Personal favorite: PRIMAL FEAR

Jeff Bridges
1978 film: SOMEBODY KILLER HER HUSBAND

The Dude keeps making multiple films a year and lately he's been garnering acting award nominations.

Personal favorite: THE BIG LEBOWSKI

Dustin Hoffman
1978 film: STRAIGHT TIME

The recent Kennedy Center honoree hasn't done anything too great recently (unless you like KUNG FU PANDA), but he's probably right up there with DeNiro in terms of the greatest living actors.

Personal favorite: TOOTSIE

Born to write (literally much to the displeasure of his mother, he emerged with a pencil clutched in one tiny fist), Tim spends most of his days crafting epic monosyllabic poems, new comical titles to his favorite Beatles' songs (Hey, Dude), and angry letters to local businesses that have wronged him in some way. He's really an okay guy once you get to know him.
