What is it about French films that give them a timeless quality? Is it the 1970s-era technological touches, such as the split screen? Is it the way they always seem to take 30 minutes to get going? Is it that the actors are seldom good-looking? Except for AMELIE and THE CLOSET, I'm generally pretty confused by French films. I think much gets lost in translation. If you feel the way I do, but want to give some a try, see this guest column written by my friend and Francophile, Margaret.
At least Marguerite has great shoes
Alain Resnais's WILD GRASS (2009) is a French film based on Christian Gailly's novel L'incident. And boy howdy, is it a French film, complete with a heroine with bad hair, thought bubbles, and a plot driven mostly in the characters' imaginations. Dentist Marguerite (Sabine Azéma), who has a thing for shoes, is mugged. Her wallet is found by Georges (André Dussollier), a very disturbed man. And by disturbed, I'm serious: he has to actively push back homicidal thoughts. And lucky
Marguerite, Georges becomes obsessed with her. And to find out what happens next, you'll just have to see the film. (Really, you have to see it for yourself. I'm not being coy-- after he slashes her tires but she isn't afraid of him, I got totally lost).
scream real loud!
