Still Wanna Do Her?

Still Wanna Do Her?

Like most male adults, I occasionally watch an adult film. I'm not saying that I cocoon myself in my basement in the dark, leering at innocent Hollywood hopefuls who were lured into pornography. But career adult performer who has made a decent living titillating closet pervs like myself.

Lately, there's been talk on this site of legitimate actors who had their start in adult films. I've noticed that the other way around is also prevalent. I've noticed that more than a few adult film stars have used horror or B-movies as a stepping stone into legitimate cinema. The most successful Success Story to date is Traci Lords, who started her adult film career as a minor, unbenownst to the entire adult film community (though many believe the adult film community just looked the other way because she was so marketable), who broke out of the adult film industry by "outing" herself, then, after doing a few low-budget movies, went to B-movie mogul John Waters in who put her in CRYBABY, her breakout film. From there, she worked her way up, taking whatever parts she could get, never disrobing or playing a prostitute or otherwise sexually-centered roles, until she's become a legitimate working actor, even getting a regular role in the Sci-Fi series "First Wave" and a featured role in BLADE.

Ever since Marilyn Chambers (the infamous Ivory Snow girl), had her breakout mainstream performance in RABID, other adult film stars, wanting to duplicate Lord's success, have also taken the back door to legitimacy (sorry - it was too much to resist), and have crossed over into horror, mainly, with varying degrees of success. Most have tried to keep to the high road and have not reverted to what they were famous for, but for some, that was their only claim to fame and didn't have the acting chops of Lords.

For your review, I've compiled a list of adult star actresses who have transitioned into legitimate cinema via horror. One interesting factoid: whereas the female adult film stars have made dubiously successful transitions to straight movies, their male counterparts have not fared as well, relegated to playing bit parts, and usually gay characters, but have never, to my knowledge, made it completely into the legitimate film world.

First, the disclaimers: I am not a Magna Cum Laude scholar of adult films, so there may be huge gaps (sorry) in my research. Also at this time, I need to disqualify adult film superstar Ron Jeremy who is the biggest enigma in adult film entertainment. (If you don't know who Ron Jeremy is, you shouldn't even be reading this column!) At 57 and the star in over 1,750 adult films, he is still working in adult films today(??), is assumedly, unlike most of his late colleagues AIDS-free, and manages to cross back and forth between doing adult films and mainstream cameos, usually playing himself, in TV and films. He is a freakin' industry!

With that, let's so what we've got:

ONE EYED MONSTER (2008):

Starting out the list, and by no means whatsoever the bottom of the barrell is the veteran "acting" team of 80's adult film performers
By All Industry Standards, He Should Not Be Alive Today

By All Industry Standards, He Should Not Be Alive Today
Veronica Hart, 2002 AVN Hall of Famer and Ron Jeremy who are reunited in this hilarious homage to horror. Stranded by a storm, the cast and crew of a adult film flick fall prey to a vicious killer when Ron's (Jeremy) dismembered member is possessed by a bloodthirsty alien. Now they'll have to destroy the slithering monster before it spreads its deadly seed across the world. Amber Benson, Carmen Hart and Charles Napier also star.

TROMEO and JULIET (1996):

One of the most famous male adult film stars and the Mayor of Tromaville, Ron Jeremy, in a surprisingly moving retelling of the Bard's famous romantic tragedy in fine Troma fashion, complete with a Manhattan setting, gratuitous violence, body-piercing, and a hard-driving alternative soundtrack. Winner of the Raindance Audience Award. TROMEO and JULIET features the work of SCOOBY-DOO and DAWN of the DEAD screenwriter James Gunn and more tromatic obsessions than one can shake a nipple-ring at! In director Lloyd Kaufman's hands, Will Keenan and Jane Jensen provide an intoxicating screen chemistry that has garnered critical acclaim from critics everywhere.

ZOMBIE STRIPPERS (2008):

The once hot Jenna Jameson built a adult film empire while becoming one of the most famous adult film actors in history. Much like Jeremy, she was also successful in crossing over into the mainstream and she eventually retired from adult film. ZOMBIE STRIPPERS was her first non-adult film movie after her she left the business, and it also stars Robert Englund and Jameson's current boyfriend Tito Ortiz. The film takes place in a George Bush-controlled dystopic future where public nudity is outlawed, and the U.S. is at war with several other countries. When experiments to revive the dead as soldiers goes wrong, an underground strip club is infected with a zombie virus... You can probably guess the rest.

The DEVIL'S REJECTS (2005):

In Rob Zombie's DEVIL'S REJECTS Captain Spaulding gets to bang the woman of his dreams, adult film star Ginger Lynn Allen. Allen tried launching a singing career, starred in the video game Wing Commander with Mark Hamill and had a few bit parts in films like Young Guns II. However, she never really made the transition from adult film slut to movie star.

Plot: Texas sheriff John Wydell (William Forsythe) seeks vengeance against his brother's creepy murderers in this Western-flavored
I Didn't Get My Dollar!

I Didn't Get My Dollar!
sequel to Rob Zombie's HOUSE of 1,000 CORPSES. Wydell enlists the aid of two vigilante brothers, and the posse heads out to the Firefly homestead to take down Otis, Baby, Tiny and Captain Spaulding once and for all. Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon Zombie, Matthew McGrorey and Leslie Easterbrook co-star.

VAMPIRE VIXENS from VENUS (1995):

Hideous in their original form, three alien drug smugglers transform into beautiful women on Earth. Their drug is derived from the life essence of men and they're on a mission to drain every last drop. Packed with eye-popping state-of-the-art special effects, VAMPIRE VIXENS from VENUS is a funny, sexy sci-fi thriller. Featuring former adult film star and now Scream Queen Michelle Bauer (PUPPET MASTER III) and Penthouse pet Leslie Glass.

RABID (1977):

Literally the movie that started it all, Marilyn Chambers will always have a special place in horror fans hearts for playing Rose in David Cronenberg's" RABID. Chambers also appeared in the adult film classic, BEHIND the GREEN DOOR.

Plot: After undergoing radical surgery for injuries from a motorcycle accident, a young woman develops a strange phallic growth on her body and a thirst for human blood - the only nourishment that will now sustain her. Vampire-like, she prowls the city of Montreal, using her sexual powers to attract victims, who she then infects with a particularly virulent strain of rabies. In no time at all, the city is reduced to a raging mass of rabid, salivating monsters and only an army of machine-gun-wielding soldiers can subdue them. David Cronenberg's horror film explores the relationships between sex and violence, between bodily disintegration and the disintegration of society.

FRIGHT NIGHT (1981):

Our only gaysexual adult film star and reverse story, Stephen Geoffreys who played the famous Evil Ed in this film, went from horror icon to gay adult film star in the 90's. Geoffreys kept busy in gay adult film for the last decade until he made his return to the horror genre with SICK GIRL in 2007.

Plot: When a teenager learns that his next door neighbor is a vampire no one will believe him.

SMASH CUT (2009):

Adult film star and professional model Sasha Grey makes her debut in this Lee Demarbre gore-fest: Plot: With his recent films failing to impress anyone, independent horror auteur Able Whitman (David Hess) is desperate to win fans -- and win them he does when he begins to use real body parts as set dressing in this splatter flick send-up from
The Next Generation

The Next Generation
director Lee Demarbre. While a car accident provides him with the initial body parts -- which belonged to a stripper (Grey)-- Able begins to resort to more desperate measures when his new realism catches on.

FACELESS (1988):

Adult star Brigitte Lahaie, French adult star (yeah, I had to look that one up myself) did a number of horror films, but FACELESS seems to be the one that stuck: From one of the world's most prolific horror filmmakers, Jesus Franco, director of VAMPYROS LESBOS, SUCCUBUS, SHRIEK'S SHOW, KILLER BARBYS, and many more! Plot: When a powerful industrialists' (Telly Savalaa) fashion model daughter (Caroline Munro) goes missing, Detective Sam Morgan (Christopher Mitchum) uncovers clues that lead him to the mad doctor's (Helmut Berger) secret house of surgical horrors.

Honorable Mention, though not exactly horror (discounting their performances)

Anna Nicole Smith model, TV reality star, and 1993 Playmate of the Year, has in her repertoire NAKED GUN 33 1/3 and starred her own comedy vehicle, ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Lastly, Georgina Spelvin, the Grandmother of Adult Films (The DEVIL and MISS JONES), plays (unfortunately) a hooker in POLICE ACADEMY and reprised her role in a brief cameo in POLICE ACADEMY 2: THEIR FIRST ASSIGNMENT.

EPILOGUE: Everybody deserves a second chance. Whatever their reasons for getting into adult entertainment and whatever reasons they had for getting out, or in some cases, wanting the best of both worlds, far be it for us to judge.

When I get up on my soapbox, I like to end with a quote. Today we paraphrase John Bradford, an English evangelical preacher and martyr (circa 15101555), who, on seeing several criminals being led to the scaffold in the 16th century, remarked, "There but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford," which has been paraphrased to the more popular "There but for the grace of God, go I." No one can predict where you'll be, even one second from now, and it is the journey, including the stops along the way, that defines your life.

As the story goes in regards to RABID -

Apparently, Director Cronenberg originally wanted the gash where the phallic needle protrudes from Marilyn Chambers' body to be literally at her vagina (which makes a lot of sense since this was a film about sexual promiscuity), but due to the obvious risk of heavy censorship with that one, he opted for the gash to be located at her nicely shaved arm-pit (!?) - Yep. A mighty poor substitute, indeed.

I think that Chambers could have handled the job quite professionally had the gash been at her gash, don't you?

Mike Thomas was introduced to science fiction when he first watched 2001 - A SPACE ODYSSEY, and was hooked ever since. But he doesn't just watch the gee-whiz, gollee-gee special effects. He watches the costumes quirks, evaluates the musical scores, even identifies favorite actors of directors. He collected comic book, but has moved on to weapons: he currently owns the Mj?llnir - the Hammer of Thor, Electra's Ninja Sai's, Mace Windu's Light Saber, and a couple of Batarangs.
