Here comes Savage Dragon! |
| No, not the Hulk. I am referring to the subject of today's column, Savage Dragon. After seeing what Hollyweird has been able to do on the big screen with Hulk, Hell Boy, Mr. Hyde (of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Educational Alpha) and Ben Grim/The Thing, I think it is about time they have their way with Image Comics' resident big guy. This is a character whose origin has been shrouded in mystery for a long time and people just love the guy. I want to see a Savage Dragon movie, and I'll bet I am not alone. Let start me off with an introduction to the character.
Dragon was found in the middle of a burning field with no memory by Lt. Frank Darling of the Chicago Police Department. With no recollection of how he got there, but demonstrating superhuman power, Lt. Darling tried to recruit him to help in the war against a group of superhuman villains called Vicious Circle lead by

In the meantime Vicious Circle became much bolder, killing hero Mighty Man and beating hero Super Patriot within an inch of his life. Darling became desperate and paid members of Vicious Circle to threaten his cousin, hoping it would prompt action from Dragon. It worked, but unfortunately resulted in Circle members Skullface and Hardware detonating a bomb in Dragon's warehouse which ended up killing Darling's cousin. Dragon decided to take up the fight against the Circle and join the Chicago Police Department. The problem was that, at that point, Lt. Darling was being controlled by the Overlord and constantly was undermining Dragon's efforts.
This was a recurring theme throughout the series. Dragon has had

They eventually resolved his origins by revealing that he was in fact an evil tyrant named Emperor Kurr who lead a team of aliens who lived in a colony aboard a starship. They spent millennia search for a habitable planet to relocate to and found Earth. Kurr was all in favor of wiping out all humans and taking Earth as their new home. Two of his science advisors Rech and Weiko were strongly apposed to this idea. They wanted Kurr to not only spare the planet, but be able to empathize with its inhabitants (what better way to do that then to inflict brain damage resulting in amnesia and abandoning him on the planet? - Altruistic Alpha.) This way he could see humanity and realize every life

The bottom line is there is real potential with this franchise. You have a guy who doesn't know where he is from, how he got there and where he is going in life. He has superhuman strength and endurance, but is unsure of how to use them. Plus he is one of the surliest guys you will every meet (think of Hulk with Wolverine's personality - Corny Craig.) You would mainly have to rely on somebody who can pull off a gruff voice and attitude. This would be something along the lines of FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER or HELL BOY II: GOLDEN ARMY. A lot of action, tasteful special effects and sprinkle it with a little drama and comedy. This is just my take on it though. Thanks for reading true believers, EXCELSIOR!

I am the first and the last, maybe not. I'm 31 years old and still spend my disposable income on comic books. Might as well put it to good use.
