The reason Drew's new guy looks familiar-- He's the cute Mac boy! |
| Dearest Drew,
I've been seeing you everywhere lately. On the cover of People with your cute new beau. In Cover Girl commercials. On the cover of Vogue in a stunning red dress. You're a hot topic, especially because you are making your directorial debut! Way to go, sister, that is so cool!
I feel like I've grown up with you. We're close to the same age, you know, and you were the first actress I was familiar with: I have a fond memory of seeing ET in the theater, my mom snoozing next to me almost the entire time. Afterwards, I thought I should be famous. I told my family I wanted to act or maybe be a model. My grandmother suggested I would be a good candidate to model for the Sears catalog. Sadly, those dreams never came true; the closest I've ever come (so far) to the spotlight was starring in a one-act in college for a friend who was taking a drama directing class. So, while I never really acted, I admire you for doing it, and with such cojones. You've not only played the Hollywood game, you've changed the rules!
It's been a rough road sometimes. Sure, we made some bad choices in our

| teen years, but, hey, that's what adolescence is for. I won't comment on whose flub ups were worse, but I will contend that your comeback was much more spectacular. I remember sitting captivated at an old boyfriend's place watching POISON IVY, completely ignoring him and his annoying roommate, and being so glad that you were back in movies (there was quite a bit of TV in the 80s; I remember in particular an afterschool special). I was impressed by the brilliant way you positioned yourself in SCREAM, your character dying early so that the audience just wanted to see more of you. Your tiny role as the adorable Swedish secretary in WAYNE'S WORLD 2 was the highlight of that movie, and arguably the best part of the either WAYNE'S WORLD film.
And on the subject of romance, we both have a row or two we'd like deleted off the old spreadsheet. I've dated a few musicians myself. Do you like hands? I notice eyebrows, shoulders, and hands first, and I wonder if that's why I've been drawn to musicians in the past. Our unlikely past matches is something I like about the two of us: We can see the not always obvious potential in people and allow ourselves to be charmed by things beyond the superficial. Romantic, complicated women like us can be taken by wit, eyes, cowlicks, and quirks.
I won't pretend that I've loved every movie you've been in. Some were not worthy of you, like BATMAN FOREVER and HOME FRIES. And I really have to decline to comment on DUPLEX. But so many others are lovely and beautiful and have enhanced my life so much and have brought countless people such joy. Tons of my female students list EVER AFTER as one of their fave movies, and for me and that whole desert-island thing, I'd have to bring THE WEDDING SINGER, FEVER PITCH, and 50 FIRST DATES, which I've seen close to 50 times, and that scene where Lucy is painting and singing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is so damn cute I cry every time.
I loved you for dancing for Dave Letterman. I admired the way you handled reporters when they asked you ridiculous, lame-ass questions after your house burned down. I love that none of Flower's CHARLIE'S ANGELS used guns, just brains, awesome moves, and cell phones. One of the main reasons you

| are so appealing, Drew, is that you exude the understanding that even though your family is Hollywood royalty, and even though you're breathtakingly beautiful and talented, you're still a human, a woman, a chick, an artist, and a girl. You exude all these things in your interviews, in the way you giggled with Jimmy Fallon on SNL, in how you treated Brian in MY DATE WITH DREW, and the way you smiled and played on the beach a couple weeks ago, not being bothered by photographers snapping away.
I adore you, Drew. I can't wait to see WHIP IT!
Love,
Du
An aside to all readers: Thanks for all the warm wishes you sent after my last column. I even received an early Christmas invite to California! (Thanks, Chase. I'm thinking about it). In addition, I have enjoyed learning what my readers like to watch when they're sick and in need of comfort (and I welcome more readers to share-- it'll end up being a great column). How many of you caught that nasty flu? I think that was the meanest virus that's ever invaded my body.
