*sigh* Hollywood's been awfully silent... |
| The other day I started making a list of all the things I'd like to happen in 2008. No, not my resolutions...rather, a list of movies, people, stories, directors, etc. that I'd like to see this year. Besides me, that is. (But who knows? This could be my year!)
~ A swift end to the strike, in favour of the writers. Naturally.
~ Kevin Spacey! He's been MIA, hasn't he? I'd like to see him in a good period drama.
~ Kate Winslet and/or Annette Bening winning an Oscar! (Obviously this would be the 2009 Oscars, but their movies would be out this year, more than likely!)
~ M. Night Shyamalan just writing or directing, but not both. And not trying to create a huge twist. Hasn't really worked since THE SIXTH SENSE, anyway. He's definitely talented, but I feel that he tries too hard. He should forget about trying to make a blockbuster, and concentrate on story and character development instead.
~ Kevin Kline! Where's he been?! With Kevin Spacey, I guess. Actually, he's been on Broadway, and I can't get mad at him for that. But I'm ready for a new Kevin Kline movie! Whether Shakespeare or WANDA-esque comedy, I'm ready.
~ Historically accurate anything. A real story, without the Hollywood touches... perhaps on some of the lesser-known monarchs of Great Britain? Like Matilda, or Aethelbald? (Of course, there may not really be any stories worth telling...I'd have to dig deeper than my basic knowledge of monarchs, I'm afraid.) But what about Brian Boru, of Ireland? Or even an awesome telling of the
C'mon...you know you'd watch it!!! |
| Cuchulain stories would be great! (That wouldn't be historically accurate, I'm aware of that...since Cuchulain was fictional!) Or how about a biopic on the Bronte family? And you know what else I'd love to see? (I'm getting excited now!) An Irish film. Done all in Irish Gaelic, maybe set in 1100 AD, or before. Fictional characters, but an historic background. I can go on and on, but I'll stop there!
~ The Time-Traveler's Wife brought to the Big Screen. I've heard rumours about this for a while, but haven't heard that it's actually been cast. If not, may I make a suggestion? I do not want Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Jennifer Anniston, or Jennifer Garner in the title role. (Also, no Tom Cruise for the husband.) Let's see what other actresses we can find to play this character! Maybe *gasp* someone unknown? I can't honestly think of who I'd like to see in these roles, though. Maybe Luke Wilson as the husband...? I dunno. What do you think? Ack! Maybe I should do my homework more often...they've been making this film already! And thank goodness, none of the above-mentioned folks are in it. But Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, though great actors, are a tad younger than I'd like. Ah, well. I hear Ron Livingston's in it...that's always good!
~ Less comic book adaptations. (I know--keep wishing!) But haven't they done everything already? How many comic books do we really need brought to life?
~Speaking of adaptations, I want a musical. But I can't think of what I'd like to see adapted for the screen. I thought
You thought I was kidding... |
| of THE WHO'S TOMMY...already a movie-musical, though describing that piece of filmmaking as "good" is overstating things a bit. I don't think anyone really needs to see Ann-Margaret rolling around her living room in bubbles, beans, and chocolate. Or getting overly familiar with a giant hot-dog shaped pillow. *ahem* However, when it was adapted for the stage in 1993, they did a helluva job. I'd love to see that on screen!
~ Oscar nominations, if not wins, for ONCE and THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY. I'd like to see a best song nomination for "Falling Slowly" (ONCE). And for BARLEY, I'll take anything. This film was the 2006 Palme d'Or winner at Cannes...that should be good enough for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Director nominations. At the very least. I will not be a very happy camper if these aren't announced as nominations!
~ Judi Dench. She just needs to be in something every year, huh? We all love her, admit it.
~Ralph Fiennes in another romantic drama. Something to make us forget about He of Slits for Nostrils!
~ A reunion for Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Thompson, and Merchant Ivory. I realize that Ismael Merchant is no longer with us, but the company is!
And that's all I came up with. What do you think? Would you watch any of those? Or do you like Ann-Margaret's roll in the beans?
Well, I guess we won't be seeing much of anything until the strike ends. But by golly, we'd better see those nominations for ONCE and BARLEY!
