The bisexual flag.

The bisexual flag.
What is up with all the bisexual actresses all of a sudden? I swear, every time I turn around this girl is banging that girl, there are photos of her and her kissing, and someone's just come out of the closet.

Not that I'm complaining, of course.

It just strikes me as odd—hypocritical, even. It's considered such a horrible career move to come out as a lesbian. You'll be type-cast or people won't believe you when you play opposite a man. But, if you're bisexual, it's a-okay in Hollywood.

Hell, it's almost second nature.

It seems all the It Girls like fish, on occasion. Of course, there's well-known bisexual actresses Drew Barrymore and Angelina Jolie. They've no qualms about discussing the fact that they're attracted to women.

Also on the list are:

Summer Altice, who talked openly on the Howard Stern show in 2002 about a sexual encounter she had with another model involving a strap-on.
(This is one of those things I hear about and think, "Why not me?")

Bai Ling who played Senator Bana Breemu in STAR WARS III: REVENEGE OF THE SITH mentioned in a 2004 New York Daily News article (the excerpt of which can be found on the Encyclopedia of Lesbian Move Scenes website) that "gender is not a problem" for her.

And, that's all well and good. I'm not ragging on bisexual women. I myself engage in the guy love every so often. Love (or libido) knows no gender and I can dig that.

But, why is it so acceptable to be bisexual in
Anne Heche: One sexually fluid bag of crazy.

Anne Heche: One sexually fluid bag of crazy.
Hollywood?

Is it because there is still a certain level of "straightness" there that can appeal to the All-American family? There's still the possibility that they can be good, wholesome young ladies who will eventually find a nice man and settle down; they're just a bit confused, right now.

Is it because Hollywood (like so much else in America) is a patriarchal scene? Hot girl-on-girl action, but she can still go home with him tonight! In the words of Paris Hilton, "That's hot."

Like figuring how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know.

But, all of that aside, I have to say my favorite Hollywood sexuality phenomena is the girl who comes out and then later says, "No, I'm not gay. What are you talking about?" Those boomerang bisexuals or lesbians who jump back into the closet when they realize just how bright it is outside.

I have two such cases. The first is probably the most well-known case of boomerang sexuality in Hollywood. I'm talking, of course, about Anne Heche.

As I'm sure you all know, she dated Ellen DeGeneres for three years. They were plastered all over the papers declaring their love. It was a virtual media blitz of "WE'RE GAY AND WE'RE PROUD!" Then, they split up and Anne married a cameraman. The operative word there being "man."

Although, Anne still maintains that she isn't straight. She said in an interview with The Advocate, "I have been very clear to everybody that
LIAR!

LIAR!
just because I'm getting married does not mean I call myself a straight. [sic]"

The other case I bring up simply because it broke my heart, since I think this chick is absolutely adorable.

Joey Lauren Adams played lesbian Alyssa in CHASING AMY. In a 1997 Planet Out interview she said that she considered herself to be bisexual. And I quote, "I'm bisexual, and I realized that when I went to Bali where the culture there is very bisexual, and it is the first time I was very attracted to women."

Nine years later, in an interview on SuicideGirls.com, she claimed that her being bisexual was just a rumor, "I'm not bisexual but I've seen on the internet that it says that. It's a rumor."

I have no problem with bisexual women in Hollywood. I have no problem with bisexual women in general. But, I absolutely hate women who claim they're gay/bi and then claim they're straight.

Joey Lauren Adams, pick an identity and go with it.
