One of the best lesbian flicks, ever. |
| I am a very poor college student who is currently trying to save her sinking grades and find employment. As such, I don't have the time, energy or money to go out to movies as often as I'd like (curse you previews; taunting me with flicks that I will most likely not see for another freaking year). I also don't have the money to rent videos (despite the ease and low, low cost of a Netflix account).
So, what do I do in these times of crisis? I turn to TV. Edited or not, it serves the purpose.
There are a few channels that play movies all day. AMC is always the first that comes to my mind, especially since they switched from just airing classics to adding newer titles. There's also Turner Classic Movies (TCM), which tends to have something pretty good on.
VH1 occasionally plays "movies that rock." The Comedy Central "Secret Stash" (Saturdays at one in the morning) is good for unedited, uncensored stuff. But, the majority of what they play is a bunch of toilet humor trash. While that can be fun sometimes, you get sick of seeing SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, AND UNCUT or Sara Silverman's stand-up routine.
No matter what channel I flip to, though, I notice a very large lack of gay and lesbian themed movies on basic cable, or even premium cable.
I mean, "straight" movies are okay. They're just as entertaining and provide me with something to distract me from how boring my homework is or how much I really don't want to work for that store
It doesn't matter how young you are; sometimes you just know. |
| I'm filling out the application for. But, sometimes my inner Super Queer Chick wants to come out (so to speak) and indulge in some sexy girl-on-girl movie action.
Until recently, I resigned myself to the fact that those movies would be limited to once in a blue moon, since I have no Netflix account and I defy you to try and find more than three lesbian themed movies on the shelves of Blockbuster.
Then, something happened that changed my queer life. My mother signed us up for premium cable. We have over 300 channels of entertainment to choose from. I turn my nose up at most of them (because, sorry, but I'm just not interested in Arabic MTV), but there are a select few that caught my eye.
One of which is Logo. Logo, for those who aren't aware, is a completely gay channel. All of their programming is queer-themed or at least queer-friendly. They play reruns of QUEER AS FOLK (I loved that show) and BAD GIRLS (a U.K. based TV program about a women's prison).
They also play at least 2 gay/lesbian themed movies a day. Often times more.
In the past month, I've been exposed to queer movies that I didn't even know existed (of course, I'm sure a lot of you did; I don't claim to be even half as movie-knowledgeable as any of my fellow columnists).
I've seen EDGE OF SEVENTEEN twice, now. It's a good movie, although it lacks that lesbian quality that I, being female and queer, crave so much.
They had a really good transgender movie called
And chocolate is pretty good. |
| MA VIE EN ROSE. Again, it lacked the lesbian quality I want, but it's still a movie I plan to add to my collection once I have the finances. Maybe I'm just a sucker for foreign films, especially those of the French variety.
Just the other day I sat down and turned on the TV to find two amazing back-to-back lesbian movies playing.
The first was about a married theatre teacher who begins a lesbian relationship with one of her students, called INTENTIONS. This would be a tear jerker, if I had the capacity to feel, at the time (no, I'm not a sociopath; I was just very busy).
The second is a movie I've seen probably ten times, but I never get sick of. This ranks up there as one of my all-time favorite lesbian flicks. The movie: KISSING JESSICA STEIN. This is an amazing movie about a neurotic straight Jewish woman (Jessica) who answers a woman's personal ad and ends up in a relationship with her. I'm not a huge fan of the ending (I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it), but it's a great film, none the less.
I can't wait until next week. They're going to be showing BETTER THAN CHOCOLATE, which I've been meaning to rent, but can never seem to find.
So, if you're too busy or broke to make it out to the movies or rent and you need your queer movie fix, you may want to look into whether or not your cable service provider offers Logo. You won't be disappointed.
