What would I do if this guy knocked me up? |
| Do your abs still ache from laughing so hard at KNOCKED UP? Yeah, mine too. Judd Apatow is better than crunches. My boyfriend came home with it on Tuesday and I was ecstatic. It has the coveted place in my cabinet next to THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and ANCHORMAN, and, one day in the future, SUPERBAD. But on to the subject at hand: October 2 releases. Luckily, baseball is heating up and the new fall shows have started, because there's not much to report. (We watched The Office last night that we had tivoed: man, Dwight has outdone himself and is beyond disturbing).
There are some things of note coming out this coming Tuesday. First, THE JUNGLE BOOK'S 40th ANNIVERSARY two disc set. We all remember the story, right? Disney's adaptation of Kipling's story of Mowgli, a human boy brought up in the jungles of India. It includes lots of good life lessons about friendship and being yourself. And some catchy songs like "The Bear Necessities." Reviewers are giving it a thumbs up, saying that the new "digitally enhanced" version looks great, with brighter colors and cleaner contrasts.
THE WAR- A FILM BY KEN BURNS AND LYNN NOVICK took 6 years to make. This 7-part PBS series with voice work by actors including Tom Hanks, Alan Arkin, and Samuel L. Jackson is noted for its vivid details from WWII and disturbing music. It's been praised and criticized alike for its American focus. I stand by the directors' choices; the aftermath-at-home approach is valid and interesting. Also, there is awesome footage the likes of which you haven't seen on the History Channel (you know the shows I'm talking about–the ones narrated by Lorelai's dad that all seem like the same show).
Entourage, Season 3 Part 2 (2004). Why am I mentioning this? Oh, just mainly because I want
Alright, so he's cute, but not $50-per-season cute. |
| to vent. First off, what's up with the multiple-part television season? Brilliant way to cash in on the collectors' dimes, I guess. And why are HBO shows so much more expensive than other shows on DVD? Is it because it's "not TV"? Our poor Canadian friends, whose dollar is worth more than ours, are especially getting fleeced these days on DVDs and books. And while Entourage is not a great show, it is an entertaining show (especially lately with Anna Faris's appearances); I just don't get why we should buy HBO shows on DVD. I haven't even bought Six Feet Under, which I loved. My policy on TV shows is that unless I can imagine myself watching it when I'm stuck home with strep, or if I really want my kids to see it someday, I don't need to buy it. If you've a burning desire to catch up on Entourage (or any other HBO show), my suggestion, say it with me, is: Put It On Your Queue.
