How will Ellen do? |
| Two weeks ago in my column, I discussed what I didn't want to see at the upcoming Academy Awards. In this column, I'm going to focus on the things that I do want to see at the show. The show is only five short days away from airing live all over the world. What am I doing to prepare? I'm currently writing this Oscar column on a cold and snowy night in Chicago. I'm also watching MILLION DOLLAR BABY followed by CRASH. I've also been watching TCM's 31 Days of Oscar. I think it's safe to say that I'm officially prepared for the show. What's left? The snacks. For now, let's focus on what I want to see at the Academy Awards.
10) Video Montages
I've always loved the montages that show clips from previous Oscar films. I love trying to see how many films I can point out and recognize. I think it's a fitting touch to pay tribute to the films and actors who have paved the way for many of the stars that we see today. I'm a sucker for nostalgia. It gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling inside my stomach. If not for groundbreaking actors like Brando, we would not see a lot of the films that we see today. On the same token, a lot of fantastic directors opened up doors for films like BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and CRASH. I think you have to give props to the people who came before you. It's a fantastic way to blend the past with the present. I hope to see lots of classy and fitting video tributes this year.
9) Heartfelt Speeches
This one should not surprise anyone who knows me well. I love crying at the movies. Because of this, I want to cry at a show about movies. I love speeches that are heartfelt, sincere, and authentic. I'll never forget the speeches by Jamie Foxx and Hilary Swank at the Oscars in 2005. I love memorable speeches and moments at the Oscars. Who can forgot the speech by Tom Hanks? How about Halle Berry? I want to see someone give a speech that just brings the house down. What if Scorsese opens up the flood gates? That would be quite interesting to see.
8) Movie Comedy
I love humor that pokes fun at different movies or actors. A lot of movies released are just not very good. I want to see Ellen poke fun at some of the crappy films that were released in 2006. It really shouldn't be

| that hard. You can even poke fun at the newly released HANNIBAL RISING. The sky is really the limit when it comes to films that need a good tongue lashing. I hope someone stands up and rips them a new one. We need someone other than a film critic to have a loud voice in Hollywood. Ellen might be just the host to unleash some wicked views on some truly awful films. If not, maybe little Abigail Breslin will do it? Just kidding.
7) Great Music
I think it's a nice change of pace from the usual format of the show. You need a little music to get you excited and pumped. If not, it's very easy to become bored at the show. I love the show, but it can become tedious. Sometimes a little music can be just what you need to get you in the right mood. Dolly Parton was fantastic last year at the Oscars. Her song had me jumping up in my chair. We also had the unforgettable Three 6 Mafia at the Oscars. They brought such energy and enthusiasm to the show. I hope we get some fantastic live performances at the show this year. It really makes the show much more enjoyable.
6) Comical Moments
I want to see something outrageous occur at the Oscars. Perhaps someone will trip? How about a boob being exposed? I want to see something wacky and bizarre at the Oscars. How about someone being booed off the stage? I live for the embarrassing and random moments at the show. I want a moment that will be talked about all week. How about Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson start fighting on stage? I'm up for anything crazy and silly at the show. I chuckled at the Sean Penn/Chris Rock feud at the Oscars. How about Michael Moore being booed off the stage? Ahh. I love classic Oscar moments.
5) Upsets
This is somewhat similar to the point that I made in my previous column. I want to see a shocker! I love winning Oscar pools, but be surprising! I want to be blown away by the fact that a certain actor or actress won the award. If not, the show is predictable, bland, and anticlimactic. I can't remember the last time I was shocked at the Oscars. I hated the Oscars in 2003. It was so boring watching RETURN OF THE KING take home all the awards. Why watch? It's like watching a football game and knowing what team is going

| to win. Why bother? You need to have some level of suspension and drama.
4) New Stars Being Born
It's amazing what being nominated can do for an actor. It can bring an actor into focus at just the right time. Jamie Foxx was considered a joke before he received two Oscar nominations in 2005. He is now viewed as one of our best actors. Virginia Madsen is living proof of the fact that an Oscar nomination can get you steady work. She seems to be in every third movie these days. Before SIDEWAYS, she was considered a B-List actress. It's all about getting the right role at the right time for the right actor or actress. Even the losers are winners at the Oscars. It can really help your career in the long run.
3) Interviews With Movie Fans
I love when they go to the streets and ask movie fans their thoughts on a lot of the Oscar films. After all, movie fans are the ones who pay for the tickets. If not for their money, you really have no film. It's always interesting to hear the perspective of a fan. Chris Rock did this at the Oscars in 2005. It turned out to be funny, realistic, and quite telling. It showed how the Academy has no idea what people want to see at the movies. I would love to see Ellen interviewing random movie fans about what films they have seen. I can imagine her reaction when she finds out how many people have seen NORBIT.
2) Ellen Being Funny and Unique
I think the host is such an important part of the show. They really set the tone for what's to come over the next three hours. They are the glue that keeps the show together. You have to be quick on your feet and ready at all times when hosting the Oscars. You can prepare what you want to say, but you also must be able to ad-lib. You have to be able to work off everyone that is on the show. If not, you will fail miserably. How will Ellen do? That's a very good question. I think her laid back humor will fit in perfectly with the Academy. She doesn't take herself too seriously. Because of this, she knows how to have fun. I think she'll be a fun host.
1) Martin Scorsese Winning An Oscar
I've said everything there is to say about this. I'll just get my Marty foam finger ready for the show. GO MARTY GO!
